Sloth in Costa Rica rainforest
5% of world's biodiversity · 4 monkey species · Sea turtles · No tour group

Costa Rica's wildlife. From someone who photographs fungi on the way to work.

I stop on the way to check my cows to photograph a spider as big as my hand. I get genuinely excited about hawk species circling above the pasture that I can't name yet, and about things most travelers walk straight past. That level of curiosity is what I bring to planning a wildlife itinerary — a fellow enthusiast who happens to live in the middle of all of it, not a checklist guide.

Wildlife that comes to you

The biggest mistake in Costa Rica wildlife travel is chasing the national parks that appear on every itinerary. The crowded ones move the animals. Costa Planner's partner lodges are set in private forest where sloths sleep overhead, monkeys arrive for fruit at sunrise, and coatimundis wander past at lunch.

For the rare species — tapir, jaguar, harpy eagle — you need Corcovado and time. Costa Planner builds itineraries that give you both the accessible daily sightings and the serious wildlife encounters.

Best wildlife spots — with independent travel logistics

Corcovado National Park

Tapir, jaguar, scarlet macaw, 13 endangered species

When: Best: Dec–Apr. Reserve months ahead.
Getting there: Domestic flight to Puerto Jiménez or boat from Sierpe. Guided entry required.
Local tip: Stay inside the park overnight — dawn walks with a local ranger change everything.

Tortuguero National Park

Green sea turtle nesting (world's largest colony), manatees, river wildlife

When: Turtles: Jul–Oct. Accessible year-round.
Getting there: Boat from Limón or La Pavona — no roads in. Part of the journey.
Local tip: Night walks on the beach during nesting season are among the most moving things you can do in Costa Rica.

Manuel Antonio National Park

Sloths, 4 monkey species, white-sand beach — easiest wildlife park

When: Good year-round. Best: Dec–Apr.
Getting there: Direct bus from San José (3.5h) or shuttle. No 4x4 needed.
Local tip: Arrive at 7am when it opens — the wildlife is active and the beach is empty.

Osa Peninsula (Whale Watching)

Humpback whales, dolphins, whale sharks (seasonal)

When: Best: Aug–Oct and Dec–Apr (humpback calving & mating)
Getting there: Domestic flight to Palmar Sur or Puerto Jiménez. Boat tours from Drake Bay.
Local tip: Drake Bay is less visited and better positioned than Quepos for whale watching tours.

Common questions

Where is the best place to see wildlife in Costa Rica?

Corcovado National Park is unmatched for biodiversity. For first-timers, Manuel Antonio gives sloths and monkeys with less effort. Tortuguero is essential for sea turtles July–October.

When is the best time to see wildlife?

Wildlife is active year-round. Dry season (December–April) gives better trail access to remote parks. Sea turtles nest July–October. Humpback whales peak August–October and December–April.

Can I do wildlife without a guide?

Manuel Antonio and Arenal are easy to self-guide. Corcovado requires a certified guide for entry by law — and it's genuinely worth it for what you'll see.

Is it safe to visit remote parks independently?

With the right plan, absolutely. The logistics need to be solid — transport, accommodation, and permits — but that's exactly what I build for you.

The right season changes everything

Sea turtles nest July–October. Humpback whales arrive August. The Quetzal nests February–May. Costa Rica's wildlife calendar is precise — and most visitors miss the best of it by a few weeks.

Costa Planner matches your travel dates to what's actually happening. If you're flexible by 2 weeks, he'll tell you which shift is worth making.
