Same tourist spots
Jacó, Tamarindo, La Fortuna or Puerto Viejo are overrun and overpriced. The lodges where owners greet you by name, the cloud forests with no crowds, the beaches where you'll spend a whole morning alone — those can be hard to find without local insight.
Off-season surprises
Costa Rica's two coasts have opposite weather. Quetzal season runs February–May. Whale watching on the Pacific peaks in August — miss the window and the experience won't be the same.
Logistics headaches
The right vehicle, the right timing. I know which roads turn to mud in rainy season, which river crossings to avoid, which national holidays will double your travel time, or when a boat or ferry saves you half a day. That's the kind of detail that changes a trip.
