Best hikes — with independent travel logistics

Cerro Chirripó

3,821m — highest peak in Central America. Two-day summit hike through páramo landscape.

When: Best: Dec–Apr. Permits sell out months in advance.
Getting there: Bus from San José to San Gerardo de Rivas (5–6h). No car needed.
Kevin's tip: Permits AND mountain refuge must be booked separately and both sell out fast. Book 3–4 months ahead in peak season.

Corcovado Multi-Day Trek

The most remote and biodiverse hike in Costa Rica. Jungle camps, river crossings, and big wildlife.

When: Best: Dec–Apr. Park entry restricted — permits required.
Getting there: Domestic flight to Puerto Jiménez + boat to trailhead. Guide required by law.
Kevin's tip: The San Pedrillo to La Sirena route (2–3 days) is the classic. Budget extra time — this is not a 'rush through' park.

Monteverde Cloud Forest

100+ km of trails through pristine cloud forest. Suspension bridges above the canopy.

When: Good year-round. Misty green season is atmospheric. Best wildlife: Feb–Apr.
Getting there: Shuttle from San José or La Fortuna (4h). No 4x4 needed.
Kevin's tip: The private reserves (Santa Elena, Bosque Nuboso Monteverde) have different trail systems — both worth visiting on the same trip.

Arenal Volcano & Río Celeste

Lava field walks around Arenal, then the surreal blue river of Tenorio Volcano.

When: Good year-round. Combine in a 2–3 day loop.
Getting there: Bus or shuttle from San José. Both parks accessible without 4x4.
Kevin's tip: Río Celeste is the biggest surprise for most European hikers — the color of the water defies belief. Go early to avoid the crowds.

Common questions

What is the best hiking in Costa Rica?

Chirripó for summit climbers. Corcovado for serious multi-day jungle trekkers. Monteverde for cloud forest day hiking. Arenal and Río Celeste for accessible scenery — all levels welcome.

When is the best time to hike?

December–April is optimal for most hikes — dry trails, clear summit views. Some routes are better in the green season when the forest is lush and wildlife is most active. I match your route to the right time of year.

How fit do I need to be for Chirripó?

Reasonably fit — it's a 14km one-way trail with 2,300m elevation gain. No technical climbing, but a good cardio base matters. Two days gives you time to acclimatize. Most healthy adults can do it with proper preparation.

Are Costa Rica parks safe for solo hikers?

Yes — the main parks (Arenal, Monteverde, Manuel Antonio) are safe and well-marked. Corcovado requires a guide by law. For remote trails, the key is the right preparation — which is exactly what I provide.
